Hemlock

Hemlock

along the surf
a house sits dry as tinder
the garden
old as the Victorians

and within
the hemlock hedge
on summer nights
the light of the fireflies
grace
a garnet of gray
stone faces
gazing up
at the moon

they wake
from their slumber
by the sea

and it frightens
me
